Etymology: From proper name Margaret (c. 1300) evolving from Old French (Marguerite) derived from Late Latin (Margarita) and having evolved from Greek (Margarites); a feminine name that literally means "pearl"; and, from Greek suffix (-oid) "in the image of".
Definitions: 1) a personage resembling or appearing in the image of a priceless bead, oftentimes a pearl. 2) something precious. 3) a person who appears in the image of Maggie (variation on Margaret); oftentimes used as a nickname.
